This statue stands in  a prominent place near the water front in Savannah. The issue of slavery dominated the politics of the mid 19th Century.

The abolition of Slavery was to President Lincoln secondary to the cause of maintaining the Union. It was however the critical and irreconcilable issue that led the states down that  inevitable path to the breakup of the Union and the bloody conflict fought to defend and preserve it.
