Various design where used between 1879 and 1956 when a flag incorporating the Confederate battle flag was introduced.

Some residents found this new flag offensive due to its historical use by the Confederate States of America and its contemporary use as a symbol by various white supremacy groups. It was adopted at the height of the fight for desegregation during the Civil Rights Movement.

Even in 1956, support for the flag was not unanimous.  The United Daughters of the Confederacy opposed the flag stating that change "would cause strife."
