In 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War Lee was offered command of the union army. He declined and on 1 June 1862, Lee assumed command of the Army of Northern Virginia. It wasn’t until 31 January 1865, Lee was promoted to general-in-chief of Confederate forces.
