The second National Flag was introduced because many thought the First National Flag looked too much like the Stars and Stripes and it was confusing to soldiers on the battlefield.  It was know as the Stainless Banner because of it pure white field.

The second national flag also proved unpopular as some thought it looked too much like a flag of surrender.  The navy thought it soiled too easily, and that it’s unusual aspect ratio meant it failed to fly properly.
