Lower New Square was laid out in 1734 and was later renamed Reynolds Square for Capt. John Reynolds, governor of Georgia for four years, from 1754-1758.  Reynolds was in fact an unpopular governor and it is said that the celebration held upon his arrival in the colony was rivalled only by that held upon his departure. He continued his service in Royal Navy, eventually rising to the rank of vice-admiral on 29 January 1778.
