W. Bro. David Savage Collection

Red White and BlueSmilers from the Royal Mail

The idea of having a stamp produced was raised by W. Bro. David Savage and some of our Brethren suggested this would be a good idea for our centenary celebrations. It was decided the explore this idea and a custom stamp was purchased from the Royal Mail. http://www.royalmail.com/personal/stamps-and-collecting/smilers/

The stamp is in two sections, the right hand side is a standard Royal Mail stamp and the left hand side is either a design from a number of standard offerings our a fully custom design as is the case with the Glandore stamp. Our design is of course the lodge crest.

The design for the envelop was perhaps a more difficult choice. Unlike on previous occasions this cover was not being produced to celebrate a Lodge event. The Lodge Crest was already being used on the stamp. We had the idea of using some significant event or achievement that would tie the design firmly to 2016. With this in mind he options where large.

  • The 90 birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Northern Ireland Qualification for the Euro 2016 Championships.
  • The Rio 2016 Olympics.
  • The remarkable achievements of Leister City football team.
  • The First British Astronaut for more than 20 years, Tim Peake.
  • Andy Murray wining his first major Clay Court Tournament in Rome.
  • A British winner of the Masters, Danny Willet.

The event chosen was the EU referendum. A potentially tricky subject as we didn't want to encourage on the taboo subjects of politics or religion. Also what relevance has this decision to Freemasonry. In truth perhaps none.

BUT...The decision could be truly one of the biggest faced in a generation and therefore at a national level is hugely significant. What choice will we make? Will it prove to be a good one in the long term?

As a Freemason living in a world of change where few things remain constant, Freemasonry is the exception. It's not that Freemasonry never changes, but it's principles or ancient landmarks remain as constant as the seasons. Based firmly on the principles of Faith, Hope and Charity, Freemaonsonry is an anchor in the storm of human existance. May it continue to encourage the principles of Brotherly love towards all men for all time as the principles on which it is founded demand it should so.
